  • Research description:
The proposed research investigates the outcomes of a structured group therapy program for late deafened adult cochlear implant recipients. The research questions include: 1) Do adult late deafened cochlear implant users demonstrate improvement in their listening (auditory perception) abilities following a 12 week, once a week structured therapy program? 2) To what extent do adult late deafened cochlear implant users demonstrate improvement in their listening (auditory perception) abilities following the therapy program?; 3) How do late deafened adult cochlear implant recipients report their perceptions of themselves as effective communicators prior to participating in the group therapy? ; 4) How do late deafened adult cochlear implant recipients report their perceptions of themselves as effective communicators following participating in the group therapy? 5) How do late deafened adult cochlear implant recipients report their perceptions of the effectiveness of the therapy program in helping them use their implants? 5-8 adult late deafened cochlear implant recipients will be referred to the project for group therapy following the activation of their implants. An initial assessment of each client’s communication performance will be determined by the following measures: audiogram, Diagnostic Questionnaire for Adults with Cochlear Implants, CID Everyday Sentences, SPIN High Context Sentences, interview. The therapy program will be conducted once a week for an hour and a half each session for a period of 12 weeks. Each therapy session will include group listening practice, instruction in using clarification strategies, group communication problem solving, and sharing successful communication strategies. At the conclusion of the 12 week- period, each client’s communication performance will be re-evaluated using the measures listed above. The interviews will be recorded and subsequently transcribed and each client will be asked to review his/her transcript for accuracy. Once the clients verify the content of the interviews, the interviews will be analyzed for emerging and recurring themes. The content of the two interviews will be compared to determine pre-and post group therapy client perceptions. Reliability will be secured by a second reader who will analyze the interviews and note themes and then comparing the results of each reader’s analysis. Data for each client’s pre- and post group therapy performance on the quantitative measures (CID Everyday sentences, SPIN High Context Sentences) will be analyzed using descriptive statistics.
