Doctoral Program in Deaf/Hard of Hearing Enrichment Activities: Suggestions for “Value Added” Activities

The purpose of this grant will be to enhance existing PhD programs in deaf education by adding value to the programs through enhancements for the doctoral fellows.

Please read the suggestions and make your comments to the right. Some of these activities came from the VI document. Add in other activities as you see fit. We will present these for discussion at ACEDHH. Please send your comments to seasterbrooks@gsu.edu at least one week before the conference so I can put it all into one document.

Why?

1. Teaching



1.1 Presentations online to undergraduates and graduate students in other programs
Presentations to deaf and hearing students who are interested in careers in deaf education who attend community colleges. (Note: about half of the nation's students of color start their postsecondary education at a community college (U.S. Dept of Education, National Center for Education Statistics, 2005). Therefore, recruitment efforts should tap community colleges (i.e. educational interpreting, ASL studies, etc.).



1.2 Teams of Fellows to teach CEU courses for ACEDHH

Encourage faculty to exhibit creativity by designing online interdisciplinary courses for doctoral students taught by faculty in different disciplines--
deaf education and psycholinguistics;
deaf education and speech and hearing sciences,
deaf education and art;
deaf education and psychology/mental health
deaf education and criminal justice/social work
deaf education and math/science education



2. Research



2.1 Joint research projects across states/programs

Collaborative research projects with doctoral consortium as well as Au.D. doctoral programs on issues that concern us....
  • early bilingual education for deaf infants/toddlers/children using the two languages.
  • early dissemination of full, non-biased information on communication options from monolingual approaches (one language) to sign-supported speech options, to bilingual options,
  • information to PED-ENTs, nurses who do screenings, other medical and audiological community about full language learning potention of deaf infants/toddlers/youth based on both sight and sound.
  • important role deaf adults play in informing medical/audiological/education community on the benefits/lack of benefits of auditory technologies depending on the individual,
  • important role of visual technology in the lives of young deaf children
  • importance of making sure educational interpreters are fully qualified when working in the schools
  • use of FM systems in the schools

    Link up state residential schools across states where doctoral students live to establish data bases for educational research. (residential schools are gold mines for data on deaf children over years of time.)

Field trips to research centers, unique training sites, sponsored by the doctoral consoritum:

2. VL2 Lab at Gallaudet Univ.
3. Clerc Center Cochlear Implant Program at Gallaudet University
4. McDaniel College: the largest producer of deaf students who are training to become teachers (could teach us alot about making higher education accessible to deaf students).
5. Vanderbuilt's Bill Wilkerson's Speech and Hearing Center
6. Huntsville State Prison in Texas (has 99 deaf inmates, 2 deaf education classes for deaf inmates)
7. National Deaf Academy: charter school for deaf children/youth/adults with psychiatric, socio-emotional disorders
8. Cognition labs at NTID
9. NAD Legal Center
